Back at Day 1

I seem to be having about as much trouble as I was previously. I stayed asleep after my 10:00 am nap this morning. I have now beat my record for staying up though.

I have now managed to go 40 hours without a full nights rest. I think this will be a good thing to measure my future success against, so I will include it in my future posts, as sort of a guideline. I think the reason that I was able to stay up was that I was doing things with my friends. I missed most of my naps, and I think that is a mistake. But isn't the goal to deprive yourself of sleep? To the point that 2 hours a day is all you need? The naps are there to help you transition.

My biggest problem is getting back out of bed after the naps. I find myself picking up my phone and laying back down with it, to be woken up hours later by my next alarm. Some possible solutions to this, are to get up and immediately do some form of exercise, like push-ups or pull-ups, or to go for a walk. I could also have my ipod nearby when I am napping, and immediately put upbeat music in my ears, so even if I do lay back down, I won't be able to sleep. Also I could nap on the couch, instead of my bed.

Okay, this is the way I am going to state my progress from now on.

Hours on the schedule: 9

Tired After Nap 3

I didn't get very much sleep from my last several naps, probably because I have a little trouble falling asleep most of the time. This one feels good because I am really feeling tired this time.

19 hours since I slept a full night.

Just Before 10 AM Nap

I have been getting more and more tired, which is good. I am excited to actually get some sleep this nap. I am updating about once every nap, so it's easy to keep track, as there is no real "Day" or "Night" in polyphasic sleep.

Time since last full nights sleep: 16 hours
Ok, here is another update. I accidently fell asleep completely at about 6:00 am today, and didn't wake up until 6:00 pm. Yeah, that ends up to be a lot more than I expected. It is almost 4:00 right now, and I have taken my 2:00 am nap since waking up at 6:00 pm. I'm obviously not very tired, I need to figure out a way to get myself completely out of bed. Right now I am using a cell phone placed away from my bed that I have to get up to turn off. I will read up on some tricks people use, and talk about those next time. Oversleeping has been the mistake of many others, and I hope this time to properly transition. My error may have been that I didn't begin to nap before I was tired.

Last full nights rest: 10 hours ago.

Welcome!

Welcome everybody! This is my blog about my experiences with polyphasic sleep. I have made some attempts with polyphasic sleep in the past, and I have been close, but never quite managed to adjust to the schedule. For those of you who don't know, polyphasic, or the "Da Vinci" schedule is where you sleep about 20 minutes every 4 hours. It is designed so that you get all of your REM sleep, the most important kind of sleep, in those 20 minute naps. It is also said to increase your IQ, but I'm not sure of that. My schedule will be as follows: 6 naps throughout the day, at 2:00, 6:00, and 10:00 (am/pm). I am about to start a new job, and the break when I am full time will be at either 10:00 pm, or 2:00 am. I am about an hour and a half away from my next nap at 6:00 am, but I will probably post soon after that. As of now, I haven't slept in 14 hours. My record for staying up, with no sleep is about 30 hours. Obviously I hope to beat that with the naps.

Thanks for reading,
Dan
